Background of the Study
Mental health is a significant area of concern in Nigeria, with many individuals suffering from disorders such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, often without access to adequate care. Nurses play an essential role in mental health care, providing not only medical treatment but also psychological support through counseling and therapeutic communication (Alhassan et al., 2023). In Sokoto State, mental health care services are limited, and many patients rely on healthcare professionals such as nurses for counseling and support. Nurse-led counseling involves providing emotional support, coping strategies, and mental health education to patients, helping them manage their conditions and improve their quality of life.
While there is a growing body of evidence supporting the role of nurse-led interventions in mental health care, studies specific to Sokoto State are limited. This study seeks to investigate the impact of nurse-led counseling on mental health patients in Sokoto State, focusing on the effectiveness of these counseling sessions in improving patient outcomes such as symptom management, emotional well-being, and overall mental health.
Statement of the Problem
Mental health patients in Sokoto State face significant challenges in accessing specialized care, which may affect their recovery. Nurses, as primary caregivers in many healthcare settings, often provide counseling to these patients. However, the impact of nurse-led counseling on mental health outcomes in Sokoto State has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in improving mental health outcomes for patients in the region.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of nurse-led counseling on mental health patients in Sokoto State.
2. To evaluate the changes in mental health outcomes (e.g., symptom reduction, quality of life) following nurse-led counseling.
3. To identify the factors that contribute to the success of nurse-led counseling interventions in Sokoto State.
Research Questions
1. What impact does nurse-led counseling have on mental health patients in Sokoto State?
2. How do mental health outcomes change after nurse-led counseling in Sokoto State?
3. What factors contribute to the success or challenges of nurse-led counseling for mental health patients in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led counseling significantly improves mental health outcomes for patients in Sokoto State.
2. Mental health patients who receive nurse-led counseling report higher levels of symptom management and emotional well-being.
3. Factors such as nurse training and patient engagement are positively correlated with the success of nurse-led counseling in Sokoto State.
